In this course students will explore xicanx/latinx heritage and history by reading xicanx authors, watching Latin American films, learning about contemporary xicanx and latinx issues, and sharing and exploring their own histories, cultures, and identities. There will be an emphasis on leadership and community involvement through field trips, guest speakers, the possibility of mentorship at la cima (a bilingual leadership camp), a bilingual career workshop with guest speakers from the community, and visits to colleges– dale UW MeCHA. Course assignments, activities, community engagements, and assessments will enable students to learn persuasive writing, narrative writing, how to make sophisticated comparisons of cultures and global perspectives, and how to write formal correspondence. Students will demonstrate multiple levels of comprehension of texts and other sources while analyzing literary themes and debating respectfully. Students and teacher will work together to explore and use new academic Spanish to accomplish these goals, so that students hone a formal register of language that they can use as needed. The course will be conducted entirely in Spanish, and students will use Spanish exclusively while in class. Students will also be expected to do their own Spanish linguistic and cultural enrichment activities in order to deepen their understanding of Spanish speaking communities around us and take ownership of the language.
